Ponnala suggests change in law

Former Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ponnala Lakshmaiah said that defected members of the State Legislature should be blocked by the party cadre from entering their constituencies and their resignations should be sought immediately.

Referring to the recent defections by MLAs elected on the Congress ticket to the State Assembly in the December 2018 election, the former minister suggested that the DCCs should stage demonstrations before the residences of the defected MLAs.

National issue

Mr. Ponnala also said he had suggested to the party high command to take up the defections issue seriously at the national level and make it a national debate to infuse fear among the MLAs who are joining the ruling party against the Constitution.

“The Anti-Defection law should be suitably amended to punish the MLAs who are vitiating the political atmosphere and lowering the image of legislators among the general public,” he said.
