KOLKATA: After introducing waste segregation in 20 city wards, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is set to set up organic waste compost plants across the city. In the first phase, the KMC solid waste management (SWM) department will set up such plants in places where the civic body will offer segregation facilities to the households generating both organic and inorganic wastes. The compost to be produced from organic wastes will be used by the KMC parks department for growing flowers and plants.
According to plans, the KMC SWM department team will visit each household in the designated wards and collect organic wastes like vegetable scrapes, fruit scrapes, cooked food, paper, timber among others. These bio degradable wastes will then be taken to organic waste compost plants for conversion into compost.
The KMC SWM department will also collect dry leaves and grass from city’s streets, parks and gardens and send those to the compost plants for producing compost, said a civic body official. “Apart from collecting organic wastes from households, we will also collect dry leaves and grass and send those to the compost plants and thus reduce air pollution,” said a KMC official.
According to a KMC SWM department official, the civic body will set up compost plants in wards where it will find ample space. Otherwise, the civic body will go for setting up organic waste composter where the KMC will face space crunch. “We have started searching for land for setting up either compost plants or organic waste composter depending on the space,” said a civic official. The official said according to availability of space the capacity of a composter plant or composter will vary. “From a capacity to handle 1ton organic waste every day, we will set up a plant which will handle 5 tons of waste or more. For this we need to search vacant space in each ward and utilize those vacant space available for setting up either organic waste compost plants or organic waste composters,” said a KMC SWM department official.
According to a KMC official, the civic body will set up the first organic waste compost plant at Chetla. “We have introduced a waste segregation project near Ahindra Mancha in Chetla a month ago. The project is running successfully. Now we want to set up a waste compost plant in Chetla to utilize the segregated organic wastes and convert them into fertilizer. Next in the line will be areas where the KMC is set to introduce waste segregation programmes. Some of these areas include Sarat Bose Road, Rashbehari Avenue, Southern Avenue, Chittaranjan Avenue, College Street, Behala, Tollygunge and Jadavpur. “In the second phase we will set up small compost plants in the vicinity of markets which produce bulk organic wastes,” said a KMC SWM department official.
