Family members of girl who committed suicide allege no progress in probe

The family of an 18-year-old girl who committed suicide in Puthuppadi panchayat on Saturday has alleged that the police had failed to conduct a fair investigation into her complaint in which she had accused a youth hailing from Adivaram of sexual exploitation.

Though the Thamarassery police registered a case on the basis of the complaint against the suspect on March 17, there was no progress in the probe, according to the family members. The police claimed that the youth had gone into hiding.

The family members alleged that the youth had sexually exploited her after arranging a fake marriage ceremony at a temple. She was later taken to various places in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu by the youth and was later abandoned, they said. In the preliminary police investigation, it was found that the youth was married to another woman.

The family also alleged that the girl was once assaulted by the suspect when she questioned his sexual exploitation and the fake marriage ceremony he had arranged at a temple to win her trust.

She had even mentioned the details of assault in her complaint given to the Thamarassery police and the subsequent death threats from him which was not taken up seriously, they claimed.

Though a suicide note reportedly recovered from her bedroom by the Kodenchery police on Saturday had no mention about anyone responsible for her death, the family members said they would approach the police higher-ups seeking a fresh investigation into the incident and the police laxity. They also said their fight would continue until the youth was arrested.
