Street Seen: Artist Aislin McTavish in Northcote
AISLIN McTAVISH, 33.
I AM IN High Street, Northcote.
I AM an artist.
I AM WEARING a top from local designer GooLife and sunnies from Tibbs and Bones. I made the bike shorts and jewellery, and I painted the shoes. I make and sell my own jewellery. I have a little label called Fruitstoop.
MY STYLE IS fruity and colourful. I like to pattern clash. I like creating jewellery to go with my favourite pieces.
I ADMIRE THE STYLE OF Iris Apfel. She is inspiring.
MY FAVOURITE PLACES TO SHOP To be honest, a lot of my friends have small local labels and I like to support them. They work really hard to create clothing that is as ethical as possible.
MY BIGGEST FASHION MISTAKE WAS I once bought a matching shirt and skirt that were beige and made me look ill. The colour did not go with my skin.
WHEN I WAS A KID I WORE I feel as though I have regressed to when I was about five or six years old, because I used to wear bike shorts and over-sized T-shirts. I was a colourful kid. But then there were a good seven or eight years when everything went a bit weird. When I was a teenager, mum bought me dresses and I accepted that because I wanted new things. But they were dresses and I did not want that.
I WOULD NEVER BE CAUGHT DEAD IN I don't think anything is too much. Some things might be culturally inappropriate, but I think if you have confidence you can pull anything off.
