CHENNAI: Sleuths from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday conducted searches in three places of A Anwar Raajha, AIADMK Member of Parliament (MP) from Ramanathapuram, pertaining to an alleged scam in the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff of the MSS Waqf board college in Madurai.
CBI sources said searches were conducted in three places in Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Chennai. In the state capital, searches were conducted in the Waqf board's office in Mannadi, sources said. In Ramanathapuram, searches were carried out in Raajha's residence while in Madurai at the college.
Raajha had created a flutter with his speech against the Triple Talaq bill in Parliament last December, after which the party was constrained to point out that it was his personal opinion. This is despite AIADMK opposing the bill. The party has formally announced an alliance with BJP. Raajha has not been given a ticket, while BJP will be contesting from Ramanathapuram.
CBI has filed an FIR on March 7 based on a directive from the Madurai Bench of the Madras high court. It was based on a writ petition filed by one Sardar Basha alleging that Jamal Mohideen, the then secretary and correspondent of MSS Waqf board college in Madurai, had entered into a criminal conspiracy with Raajha, who was chairman of TN Waqf board to appoint ineligible teaching staff in the college.
For this, he demanded and accepted illegal gratification of 35 lakh from non-Muslim candidates and 30 lakh from Muslim candidates, the petitioner alleged.
