BENGALURU: A father and his son who attempted to smuggle gold pieces concealed in wrist watches and face-wash tubes into Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) were arrested on Wednesday. The watches and tubes were seized and the gold, worth Rs 23 lakh, was extracted from them.
Sources with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Bengaluru Customs said the smuggling attempt came to light when the duo disembarked from an Air India flight (AI 339) from Bangkok. Customs sleuths intercepted the duo based on suspicion. They inspected their bags and found eight wrist watches and eight tubes of imported face washes. On further questioning and scanning of the items, tiny pieces of crude gold were found in them.
Officials recovered the gold pieces which weighed 699gms. The father-son duo was booked for bringing excess gold from Bangkok and attempting to evade duty. Customs officials stopped short of divulging the identities of the duo.
A probe is under way on whether the men are part of a gang of gold smugglers who use novel methods to smuggle the metal from the Gulf and parts of Southeast Asia to avoid detection at KIA, sources added.
