Former chairperson of Mapusa municipal council and senior councillor Sudhir Kandolkar, who was one of the aspirants for BJP ticket to contest the Mapusa bypoll, has decided to resign from BJP on Sunday.

The decision was taken by Kandolkar after holding a meeting with his supporters late Saturday night at Morod in Mapusa.

Kandolkar has been working with the BJP for over 15 years in Mapusa. He has also been chairperson of the Mapusa municipal council, backed by BJP.

Following the demise of Mapusa MLA Francis D’Souza, Kandolkar had expressed his desire to contest the bypoll. He had also conveyed his sentiment to the party and was positive about getting the party ticket. However, on Saturday, son of the former MLA, Joshua D’Souza, was given the ticket, which disappointed Kandolkar and his supporters.

Accordingly, a meeting of his supporters was held wherein it was decided that Kandolkar should first resign from the party and after holding another round of meeting with his supporters, a further decision on by-election should be taken.

“After holding discussions with my supporters, I have decided to resign from the party tomorrow and then in two days’ time, I will take a further decision after taking my people into confidence,” said Kandolkar.
