RCB are playing Shimron Hetmyer, AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali and Colin de Grandhomme in their foreign contingent. CSK, meanwhile are fielding Shane Watson, Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo.

Kohli had said that RCB are shifting their focus from fielding superstars to giving younger Indian players a go in crucial position this season while MS Dhoni will be leading a very familiar lineup made of proven but aging T20 stars. IPL 2019, CSK vs RCB Live Score and updates from Chennai:

WICKET! Tahir strikes

And it was only his second ball of the match. Young Shivam Dube completely deceived by the googly. CSK are bossing this game.

OUT! HETMYER'S DEBUT ENDS UNCEREMONIOUSLY

What in the world was the Guyanese thinking. He pushes the ball to cover where there is Suresh Raina. No chance of a run there but Hetmyer sees it somehow. By the time he realises his folly, Dhoni had already taken the bails off. RCB have been torn apart in first 10 overs of this match.

WICKET! HARBHAJAN HAS THREE

AND THIS TIME IT'S DE VILLIERS! Harbhajan has made an absolute mess of the RCB top order here. ABD goes for a sweep, which is what he did the previous ball too which ended in him being dropped. This time, it's a top edge and it flies to midwicket. Jadeja doesn't drop those.

Dropped!

Imran Tahir puts down De Villiers. Among batsmen in the world, De Villiers is the last man you want to give a lifeline to. He is on 9, how costly will this be for CSK?

WICKET!

This time it's Moeen Ali. A tame dismissal as he lobs it back to the bowler, who once again, is Harbhajan Singh. What a game the veteran is having. The ball grips even more than it did for Kohli and spins away. Moeen as too early, the ball bounces off the end of his bat and Harbhajan has the easiest of catches to take at the other end. Up next: AB de Villiers.

OUT! KOHLI DISMISSED BY BHAJJI

Shortish delivery, Kohli goes for the pull and it ends up in the hands of Ravindra Jadeja at deep midwicket. Harbhajan has not got a wicket in the last 3 T20Is that he played, what a time to break the duck and what a player to fall! The RCB captain walks for 6.

What an over from Chahar!

2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1nb, 0. All those dots came against Kohli and he followed up the no ball with an inch perfect yorker that Kohli could do nothing about. RCB 15/0 after three.

5/0 after the 1st over

The first four of the season came off the willow of Parthiv, although he was helped by a misfield at mid-off. Harbhajan to bowl the second.

And so it starts

The 50th IPL match to be played at the Chepauk stadium starts with a single. Chahar bowls one to the pads of Kohli, the RCB skipper flicks it away to fine leg and calmly gets off the mark.

The teams walk out!

MS Dhoni leads out the defending champions and the sea of yellow in the Chepauk stands erupts Kohli and Parthiv Patel open the batting for RCB, Deepak Chahar with the new ball for CSK. HERE. WE. GO.

The Chepauk

The stadium is absolutely bouncing at the moment. CSK could not play here last season due to some off-field problems but it doesn't look like that will be the case this year.

CSK bowlers

Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the season a few days back and the CSK bowling line up does look a little lean on firepower. Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo are the pacers that they have at the moment. But, considering the fact that the pundits spoke about how the pitch might suit spinners better, Tahir, Jadeja and Harbhajan might be rubbing their hands with glee.

Kohli opening

The RCB skipper will open the batting with Parthiv Patel. Shimron Hetmyer is making his debut, the young West Indies batsman has had an incredible year thus far in all formats of the game and was especially impressive during West Indies series in India last year.

PLAYING XIs

RCB: Virat Kohli, Parthiv Patel, Moeen Ali, Shimron Hetmyer, AB de Villiers, Shivam Dube, Colin de Grandhomme, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini

CSK: Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

The foreigners

Kohli said that among overseas players, AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, Colin de Grandhomme and Shimron Hetmyer will be playing for RCB. Dhoni said that CSK are playing three overseas players - Shane Watson, Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo.

CSK win the toss, elect to bowl first

Kohli called heads but it fell as tails, Dhoni says his team will bowl first.  "We have played a few practice games and it looks slightly on the slower side. We are not sure about the wicket, so we are not sure which target to set," said Dhoni. "Quite okay with batting. We would have bowled first as well, considerable amount of dew. We saw CSK chase 200-plus against KKR last year," said Kohli.

Kohli and Dhoni are in the middle

They exchange their team sheets. Toss has been advanced to 7.20 instead of the usual half-hour mark before the match. Sanjay Manjrekar has the mic in his hands the toss is coming up.

The pitch

Simon Doull says on Star Sports there is a small covering of grass but that won't be of much help to the seamers. Sunil Gavaskar reckons that the dryish nature of the pitch might encourage the spinners. Both men think that chasing would be preferred for the team that wins the toss.

The Thala is in the house

Dhoni walks out to big cheers from the Chepauk crowd. He doesn't go out to the middle, though. Instead, he interacted with N Srinivasan and the BCCI bigwigs who were there before putting in a few hops to warm-up. <

Virat Kohli

He has won everything except for an IPL trophy. In the recent ODI series loss to Australia, there were questions raised on whether Kohli is a good limited overs captain in the absence of MS Dhoni. Gautam Gambhir had said he cannot be compared to Dhoni or Rohit Sharma in terms of captaincy. But Virat Kohli does not care if he ends up getting judged on his IPL record

Earlier in the day...

... There was some bad news for Mumbai Indians fans. Lasith Malinga who seemed to have found his mojo in recent matches that he played for Sri Lanka, has been ruled out for the first six matches.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Led by Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have never won a title; in the last season the team struggled and finished sixth with just 12 points from 14 games. The Indian captain blamed poor decisions that cost them close matches, but it wasn’t even the first time the team had finished in the bottom half of the table. Given the skeptics, Kohli will keen on winning some silverware to get a major boost ahead of the World Cup. READ MORE

Chennai Super Kings

They are well and truly the big daddies of the IPL. They have never failed to make the top four in every season they’ve played. They won their third title last season, making them the most successful franchise alongside the Mumbai Indians. Their star players are either approaching the dreaded age of 35 or have crossed it, and terms like “past their prime” and “veteran” are used to describe them and yet, they won the title last season on a canter. The teams are in Chepauk

Two buses filled with cricketing superstars and novices have arrived at the Chepauk stadium. We have been building up to the big match throughout the day so if you want to see what has been the buzz thus far, go ahead and click on this link

The opening ceremony...

....has always been a big part of any IPL season but this season, there will be none. Instead, military bands will be performing before the match starts and the funds allocated for the opening ceremony has been donated to the families of the victims of the Pulwama terror attack. Hello and welcome to Match Day 1 of IPL 2019!

The T20 carnival that pretty much changed the way the game of cricket is played around the world is into its 12th edition now. It is slightly different this time in the way that there is a World Cup that is coming close on the heels of this tournament. On the one hand, are those players who would be looking to conserve their energies as much as possible because of this and on the other are those who are on the fringes of their national squads and would be looking to make a case for themselves.

Kohli had indicated that RCB's younger Indian players would be the surprise package this season. Dhoni, on the other hand, will be having a familiar lineup of tried and tested superstars to choose from. Let the party begin!
