Electric Porsche Cayenne Considered, Could Be Sold Alongside Outgoing Model

When Porsche unveiled the first-gen Cayenne in 2002, purists believed it was a very bad move for the German brand. Seventeen years later, the SUV is in the third generation and continues to enjoy a huge popularity – and Porsche is doing better than ever, thank you very much.

It could be said that the automaker foresaw that SUVs were the way to go in order to turn a profit. It wasn’t so insightful on electrification, but now it’s coming in with all guns blazing. The all-electric Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo will launch soon, while the next Macan will be sold solely as an EV.

Porsche’s ambitions might extend beyond these three, though, as AutoExpress reports that the Cayenne might be the next one in line to get an EV derivative. “This decision is not made yet. But of course, [we’re discussing] the future of almost every model, because many markets are asking for electric cars”, a spokesperson told the online publication when asked about a possible electric Cayenne.

If given the green light for production, then the electric Cayenne will likely sit on a dedicated platform. It’s possible that Porsche will be selling it alongside the outgoing iteration, just like the Macan, to cater for markets where electrification isn’t that well established yet. We reached out to Porsche and we’re waiting for an official statement on the topic. Depending on what they choose to disclose, we’ll either update this story or write up a new one.

Meanwhile, the German car firm is concentrating its efforts on turning the recently unveiled Cayenne Coupe into a best-seller. The sporty SUV comes with a choice of two engines at first and will compete against the likes of the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Audi Q8.

The new Cayenne Coupe will arrive in U.S. showrooms this fall with a $75,300 starting price, whereas the Turbo will cost at least $130,100.
