While several facilities are being made by the civic bodies to make voting exercise an easy and smooth affair, the Greater Chennai Corporation displaying a extra bit of caution has intensified animal birth control measures near the polling booths in the city to ensure protection for the electorate from mongrel menace.
Chennai:
“Based on the findings arrived from the census, we have intensified the animal birth control measures in the city. During the polling day, these dogs may create a nuisance to the voters,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
The official added that the civic body had started carrying out the animal birth control steps near the polling booths. “Also, the drive will continue across the city.”
Chennai district, which comprises three parliamentary constituencies (North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai) has 3,754 polling booths.
Meanwhile, the civic body is mulling to impound the stray dogs near the polling booths. “We cannot impound and maintain all the dogs in the city. However, we will decide on impounding the dogs on the polling day alone,” the official added.
According to the Chennai Corporation census, the city had 2,425 lactating dogs and 5,665 puppies as of November. Of the total 57,300 dogs, 6,448 dogs are sterilized female dogs and 9,130 dogs are sterilized male dogs.
As the data suggest the civic body has been concentrating more on sterilising male dogs rather than sterilising the female dogs owing to the complex birth control procedure for female dogs. “We have drafted an action plan in a way to sterilise more female dogs. We have a target of sterilising 100 dogs (male and female) per day,” the official said.
The official explained that even though the civic body decided to catch the dogs from the areas near polling booths, they must let the impounded dogs at the same places where the were captured.
The move has come after a recent dog census found that there were more than 57,300 dogs in Chennai, of which nearly 35,000 were non-sterilized and capable of reproduction.
