9 dead, 6 injured in collision on NH218

Vijayapura: Nine persons died on the spot and six others were injured when a Tata Cruiser collided with a mini-truck Canter near Chikka Sindagi village on National Highway 218 in the wee hours of Friday.
Police said the deceased are Srinath Eshwarappa Nalawar, 25, Ambarish Lakshman Dore, 30, Yunus Sarvara Patel Kadabur, 25, Sagar Shankreppa Dodamani, 22, Chand Mashyaksab Mujawar, 24, Gururaj Sabanna Hakim, 35, Shakir Abdul Rahim Shekh, 27, Ajim Abdul Rahim Shekh, 35, and Munsur Sarvara Patel Kadabur, 28. They were all from Chitapur village of Kalaburgi district. Two sets of brothers who died — Yunus & Munsur as well as Shakir & Ajim.
The injured are Manjur Sarvar Patelsab Kadabur, 32, Akash Lakshman Dore, 20, Mallikarjun Basavaraj Jamadar, 29, and Saddam Sayyad Mumbaiwale, 25, Canter driver Anand Nageshwar Rao Sopeti, 25, and tanker cleaner Sajid Ismail Sajid Khadarababu, 22, both from Tadapalli Gudam village of West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. They’re all undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
All the dead and injured are labourers who had gone to Goa on a holiday and were returning to Chitapur. The Canter was going to Tikota from Andhra Pradesh. Eyewitnesses said relatives had a tough time identifying the bodies. There was a traffic jam for more than one and a half hours.
Superintendent of police Prakash Nikkam, Additional SP BS Nemagouda, DySP SB Ankad, CPI Mahantesh Dyammanavar, Chitapur CPI B Chandrashekhar, PSI N R Khilare, Veerappa Latti and S M Shiraguppi rushed to the spot.
After Manjur Kadabur filed a complaint and Sindagi police registered a case under Sections 279, 337, 338,304(A) of the Indian Penal Code against Anand Nageshwar Rao Sopeti.
‘I lost my brother’
The injured Akash Lakshman Dore, who works at a construction site, told TOI at the district hospital: “We were a group of 12 persons who went to Goa on Tuesday. On our return journey, we left at 4pm Thursday and were scheduled to reach our village early Friday morning. All the passengers in the Cruiser, excluding four, were bachelors. I lost my brother Ambarish.”
Sunita, wife of injured Mallikarjun Jamadar, said, “I’m a Class D worker on contract basis at Chitapur village civil hospital and have two children. We expected my husband to return in the morning but heard he was in this terrible accident. We’re at the hospital caring for him.”
