Ford GT Does A Standing Mile Run, Hits A Nice, Round 180 Mph

For a supercar that’s less powerful than most of its rivals, the Ford GT is capable of some impressive performance. Naught to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) takes less than 3 seconds and top speed is 216 mph (348 km/h).

The 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 puts out 647 horsepower (656 PS / 483 kW) and 550 pound-feet (745 Nm) of torque. Add the carbon fiber body and other clever features and you have “the ultimate expressions of technological information”, according to Ford’s press blurb.

But what good is reading about the Michigan-born (and Canada-made) supercar if we cannot see it in action? Well, as it happens, we came across a video that shows the GT at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds. Yes, we’ve been there before, but this time, it didn’t go on a top speed run, as it covered a standing mile (1.6 km), and at the end of it, the speedometer was showing 180 mph (290 km/h).

The run reminds us of a heavily tuned, previous-gen Ford GT, which managed to hit more than 293 mph (472 km/h) in its standing mile run. But this one here is a bone-stock example and, altogether, a very different animal than its predecessor – one that was born to win races first, and draw a broad smile on its driver’s face second.
