Coimbatore: The Pollachi West police on Friday arrested three youths from Pollachi for robbing a fruit seller of five grams of gold, a mobile phone and Rs 620.

They were identified as U Mohamed Sheik Farid, 23, a car driver from Market Road, K Sulaiman, 24, a labourer from Kannappan Nagar and Rafiq, 23 from Kumaran Nagar.

They had targeted K Selvaraj of Pollachi. “The trio noticed Selvaraj coming out of a liquor shop on Pollachi-Meenkarai Road in an inebriated condition on Thursday night. They took him to an isolated place and robbed him. However, Selvaraj’s son Kannan and his friends, who reached the spot, chased the trio and caught Mohamed and Sulaiman red-handed, and handed them over to police. Rafiq managed to escape,” a police officer said.

Police arrested Rafiq later and registered a case against them under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. They were lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison. The trio was facing several theft cases, police sources said.
