Kolkata sees sharp decline in swine flu cases

Representative imageKOLKATA: Despite swine flu claiming a life on Thursday in Kolkata, hospitals across the city are seeing a sharp drop in the number of patients infected by H1N1. Most of the private hospitals that have isolation ward for treatment of swine flu patients did not register any new patient this week.
“There has been a sharp drop in the number of patients coming with H1N1. In fact do not have a single swine flu patient right now,” said Sinchan Bhattacharyya, chief executive, medical administration at Peerless Hospital.
Fortis Hospital has treated 21 patients with swine flu between January and March. The last swine flu patient was discharged on March 18 and since then there has been no new admission.
“From 12 patients in February the number dropped to 8 in March in our hospital. Currently we have no patient with swine flu,” said Subhasish Datta, GM (operations) at Ruby General Hospital.
On Thursday, an 80-year-old Mukul Biswas of Maheshtala died at AMRI Hospitals in Salt Lake, two days after she was brought to the hospital. The unit currently has five patients, while the Dhakuria unit has two patients.
ID Hospital Beliaghata, the government’s referral hospital for treating infectious diseases, had treated about 12 swine flu patients in the first two weeks of March. Sources in the hospital said there has been no detection this week.
"We had about five children treated for swine flu this year. Luckily we do not have any new cases as of now. Our major concern right now is cases of adenovirus. Recently we had to ventilate seven children for adenovirus at the same time," said Dr Prabas Prasun Giri, PICU in-charge at Institute of Child Health.
