The Nilgiris district police have announced stringent penalties for motorists caught illegally parking their vehicles by the side of busy streets in Udhagamandalam town.
K.V. Sadasivam, Traffic Police Inspector, said that based on instructions from the Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police, D. Shanmuga Priya, motorists, who parked their vehicles in “No Parking Zones,” would be fined ₹ 500, or would have their wheels clamped, with the vehicles being released once the fines were paid.
“To reinforce the message, we have put up sign boards at eight locations in Udhagamandalam, where illegal parking of vehicles causes huge traffic snarls, including the Ooty Coffee House Junction, Casino Junction, on Market Road and Commercial Road, at the ATC Junction and Charring Cross,” said Mr. Sadasivam.
Police officials said that the enforcement would start immediately to ensure that local residents followed traffic rules before the start of the summer season, when traffic inflow into the Nilgiris increased exponentially.
