Braving the scorching sun, a large number of devotees, many of them carrying ‘kavadis’ thronged the Sri Subramaniyaswamy Temple at Kumaravayalur on the occasion of ‘Panguni Uthiram’ festival on Thursday.
Scores of devotees carrying paal kavaadis (milk pots) walked to the temple from various places, to fulfil their vows to Lord Muruga. Special abhishekam and alankaram were performed to the presiding deity in the morning. The Valli Kalyanam will be held at the temple as part of the festival on March 25.
Police had stepped security in view of the festival at the temple.

Panguni Uthiram festival was celebrated with religious fervour at temples in and around Kumbakonam on Thursday.
While the decorated idols of the deities from Sri Nageswarar Temple and Sri Kambatta Viswanathar Temple were brought to the banks of Mahamagam Tank for ‘theerthavari’ (anointment of trishul idol in the tank), the idols from Sri Kambahareswarar Temple, Thirubhuvanam and Goddess Panthadunayagi Amman Temple, Kottaiyur were taken to the banks of Cauvery river for the ‘theerthavari’.
Similarly, the decorated idols of Sri Swaminatha Swamy of Swamimalai Temple, mounted on the golden peacock ‘vahanam’ was brought to the Cauvery for the performance of Panguni Uthira ‘theerthavari’.
The idols returned to their respective temple after the completion of the rituals at Mahamagam Tank and on the banks of Cauvery.
