Mitspa Onyoka, the man accused of murdering Irish charity worker John Curran will be back in court on April 9 to apply for his formal bail application.

Onyoka made a brief appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Friday. This, after having fired his previous lawyer during his last appearance earlier this month.

Dressed in a grey hoodie and tracksuit pants, Onyoka simply nodded when told the matter was postponed so that he would get more time to consult with his new lawyer.

Onyoka is accused of murdering Curran at a high-security complex in Buitengracht Street, in the Cape Town CBD, in November last year.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the charity worker was found in a pool of blood and that there were open wounds on his head and face.

Believed to hail from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Onyaka's application for bail has been delayed in the past due to the department of Home Affairs submitted to court that they had no record of him being in the country after 2015.

Shortly before his death, Curran had completed a tenure as director of education for Mellon Educate in South Africa.
