KOLKATA: A fire broke out in the engine of the Dibrugarh-bound Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express at around 11 am on Friday morning near Chathaat in Phansidewa block of Darjeeling district under Siliguri subdivision.
The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express is a weekly superfast express train which connects Chandigarh in the north with the Tea City of India, Dibrugarh in upper Assam.
No casaulties have been reported so far.
As the driver noticed smoke coming out of the engine, he pulled the emergency brakes and stopped the train near Chathaat station.
Help was rushed in from New Jalpaiguri. Fire engines from Phansidewa and other nearby places went to the spot and brought the fire under control. The train is still stranded at the spot of the incident while more support from NJP is on the way.
Fearing blaze, many passengers jumped out of the train. Unconfirmed sources said many passengers were injured in the process.
“The site where the incident occurred is so remote that there is almost no mobile network there. We have sent our men and are sending further support. We are awaiting the details," said Partha Pratim Roy, ADRM, NJP.
