When hundreds of religious scholars wearing white shirt, dhoti and turban engaged in cleaning the Chaliyar on the eve of the World Water Day on Thursday, it turned out to be a unique sight to watch.

The Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS) organised the river cleaning as part of its water conservation campaign. SYS Santhwanam volunteers collected tonnes of rubbish from the river and its banks from Nilambur to Oorkadavu. Hundreds of sacks of debris collected from the river were sent the solid waste management plant in Chaliyar grama panchayat.

The collected waste will be segregated and processed scientifically at the waste management plant.
