Holi revelry: 2,939 traffic violations registered, 832 booked for drunk driving

Nagpur: Around 2,900 people were booked for different traffic violations, including over 832 for drunk driving, across Nagpur on the occasion of Holi and Dhulivandan.
Out of 2,939 cases of traffic violations, 1,329 cases including 212 drunk driving cases were filed on March 20 (Holi), a senior police official said today.

The Nagpur traffic police had on Wednesday night and Thursday made elaborate arrangements to prevent any untoward incident during Holi celebrations and deployed a huge number of traffic cops to maintain law and order, and prevent violation of traffic rules in the city.

Traffic police teams with barricades or checkpoints were stationed at strategic intersections all over the city to check drunk driving, over-speeding and other violations, officials added.

On Dhulivandan, the traffic police personnel from eight zones caught 620 drivers for driving vehicles under the influence of liquor. While 990 people were booked for other violations like not wearing helmets, riding triple seats etc.

According to the data of people driving under the influence of liquor on Wednesday and Thursday compiled by traffic police, highest numbers of 174 drunk driving cases were booked by Indora Zone, followed by Lakadganj zone with 170 people booked for driving under the influence of liquor.


Sonegaon zone of traffic police booked only 40 people for drunk driving. The statistics of drunk driving cases revealed that 66 people were booked by MIDC traffic zone, 81 in Sitabuldi traffic zone, 89 in Sadar traffic zone, 99 in Lakadganj traffic zone and 113 in Cotton Market zone.


On March 20 and March 21, traffic police also booked 513 motorists for riding two-wheelers without wearing helmet, 172 for jumping traffic signal, 145 motorists were penalized for driving on wrong side, 380 for riding triple seat and 74 people for using mobile phones while driving.


Last year, 839 persons were booked for drunk driving offence and in 2017, as many as 1,208 drunk driving cases were registered during Holi celebrations.
