Parties object to rates fixed for poll expenditure

The Chennai District Election Office will revise the rates of items used for calculation of election expenditure in the city.

Representatives of political parties on Thursday objected to the exorbitant rates fixed by the Chennai Corporation for calculation of election expenses by candidates. Nine political parties participated in the meeting on election expenditure and Model Code of Conduct. For example, the Congress objected to the rates for printing posters for election campaign. The Chennai District Election Office had fixed a rate of ₹4,500 for printing 1,000 bills in a dimension of 20 inches by 30 inches. Party representatives said they have planned to print the posters at an affordable rate in Sivakasi. Similarly, party representatives also objected to the rates fixed for loud speakers used during campaign. The participants also said the rates fixed for food items was also high and requested the Chennai District Election Office to revise them.

The Chennai District Election Office had given 24 hours for parties to record their objections pertaining to the rates for the election expenditure in the city.

Another nomination

On Thursday, independent candidate K.Babu filed his nomination in Perambur.

Ten candidates have filed nomination papers so far.

Work on monitoring of election expenditure has started in all the 16 Assembly segments of the three Parliamentary constituencies in the district.
