Nagpur: There has been an overwhelming response for RTE admissions in Nagpur district with the available seats getting oversubscribed by 333% till Friday evening. For the available 7,204 seats, 24,011 applications have been received.
This number will only go higher now as the last date for RTE applications has been extended till March 30. This number also puts Nagpur district at the top slot in Maharashtra when it comes to seat:applications ratio. The number of applications received is the second highest after Pune.

An official handling the RTE admission process said, “There has been a terrific response in Nagpur for RTE and that is proof that we have created a lot of awareness about the process.”

Nagpur district has been consistently at the forefront of RTE implementation from the moment this landmark act was introduced. The state’s first RTE admission was also done in Nagpur when in July 2012, a driver’s daughter secured admission at South Point School. Ever since, the district has continued to lead the way with regards to RTE even with things other than admissions. Nagpur schools were the first to apply for NOC, as mandated under RTE, from the education department (primary).

On extension of dates, the official said, “There are still lot of parents who are applying for RTE seats and we do not want them to miss out. The extension will help all those who were unable to fill the form online and give them a chance to secure a seat in a school of their choice.”

RTE admission process is completely online with the centralized lottery being conducted by a software designed and maintained by central government’s National Informatics Centre (NIC). While the online process has increased transperancy, it has led to technical issues being blamed for errors in form submission. An RTE official said, “We have provided solution for Google Maps also so that exact residence location can be put in.”
