Mangaluru city police arrested Hakim (34), a resident of Puttur, for allegedly circulating on social media his audio clip threatening life of senior Congress leader B. Janardhana Poojary, when he arrived at Mangaluru International Airport from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

In a press conference held in December 2018, Mr. Poojary had said he wanted Ram temple to be constructed on the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya. Following his statement, the audio clip threatening Mr. Poojary of his life was circulated on social media. A complaint was filed in Kavoor police station against the person who had threatened Mr. Poojary.

Following investigation, the police found the involvement of Hakim, who was working in a firm in Saudi Arabia. Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil said the city police issued a lookout notice.

When he arrived at the airport, Mr. Patil said the immigration personnel apprehended Hakim and handed him to the Kavoor police. Hakim has been booked under Sections 153 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate and later released on bail.

Superintendent of Police B.M. Laxmi Prasad said local magistrate court in Puttur had issued a non-bailable warrant against Hakim for his failure to appear before the court in a case related to his fight with a laundry shop operator, which was registered in 2014. The Puttur Town Police took Hakim in their custody and produced him before the court on Wednesday. The Puttur court granted him bail.
