Celebrating possibilities on World Down Syndrome Day

Today is world down syndrome day... all about recognizing people living with down syndrome are... first and foremost... people!

Christina lorey had a chance to talk with melissa shutwell... a mom whose 3-year-old son augie was born with down syndrome.

Instead of dwelling on what some consider a disability... melissa celebrates her son's possibilities.

This year... the global theme of world down syndrom day is "leave no one behind"... it's a push to give every person with the condition... like augie... the same opportunities as everyone else in every area of life.

It's also a chance to share some information about local resources available to parents of kids with the condition.

Children born with d-s often experience medical complications at birth... just like augie did.

Those complications can be costly... but medicaid programs can help cover bills that insurance plans don't.

((( , " 20;22;05 in southcentral wisconsin, it's really a great place to raise a child with down syndrome because there's a lot of great organizations and support systems in place here."

"))) now... the madison area down syndrome society provides a bunch of local resources for families who have someone with down syndrome.

You can find link to those on our website, channel 3000 dot com.

Tonight... there's an event called... gallary 21... to raise awareness for people in our community living with down syndrome.

It features art exhibits at the memorial union on campus.

But if you can't go... celebrate people with an extra chromosome by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks.

We want to let you know about a special event
