A 29-year-old constable attached to the Armed Reserve Battalion attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Abhiramapuram. He has been admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in critical condition.

According to police, Saravana Kumar is a constable and works as a guard in the house of a judge who was recently transferred to Manipur. Around 4.30 p.m on Wednesday, the constable shot himself with his service rifle. Hearing the gun shot, colleagues and passersby rushed him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment. He is said to be in a critical condition.

The Abhiramapuram police have registered a case. They found a suicide note in which he held no one responsible for his act. “We are investigating the reason behind him taking this extreme step,” said a police officer attached to the Abhiramapuram police station.

Last month, K. Manigandan, 26, a constable on duty at the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) headquarters in Kilpauk, allegedly shot himself to death with his service rifle.

Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
