FALL RIVER — A New Bedford Superior Court judge will hear a request from 10 taxpayers for a preliminary injunction that would prevent the recall election of Mayor Jasiel Correia II from being certified by the Board of Elections at 2 p.m. today.

Correia was recalled by more than 61 percent of the voters and elected again by a 35.4 percent plurality vote last week.

This Tuesday, a lawsuit challenging the recall vote was filed in Bristol County Superior Court.

Correia’s closest opponent, School Committee member and former Durfee vice principal Paul Coogan, trailed at 33.63 percent.

The request for a preliminary injunction filed Wednesday also requests that a permanent injunction be granted, which would stop Correia from reclaiming his position as mayor.
