Story Hours

Legos at the Library takes place on Monday’s from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Bring your imagination and creativity. Legos provided for all ages including Duplos for the younger children.

Tiny Times with Ms. Christine takes place each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s room for children ages birth to 3. Enjoy songs, movement, activities, rhymes, books and playtime.

The Write Club, a creative writing club for 8-12 year olds, meets each Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Junior Room. Boys and girls in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade who love to write are invited to attend! This is your chance to get creative and improve your writing skills with fun activities, including funny writing prompts, group stories, writing games, and more.

The Iditarod is a very tough and exciting Alaskan sled dog race run from Anchorage to Nome, and all those who enter do it for the challenge. The Swansea Free Public Library is following the 41st Annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race this year. This challenging race of over 900 miles can take from 9 to 14 days to complete. We are holding a similar challenge in reading, called the Iditaread Challenge! Readers will sign up and have their name posted at the library. They will attempt to read a book for every checkpoint. Readers will keep track of their reading on an Iditaread Challenge Reading Log. Our reading challenge has begun and will continue until Friday April 5th. Read 25 books to mark each of the checkpoints. Pick up entree form and log at the library. Great for ages up to 14. All participants who complete the challenge will receive a collectible Iditaread dog tag.

The month ends as the Swansea Free Public Library welcomes Iditarod racer Karen Land and her dog Noggin on March 30th at the First Congregational Church located at 1113 Grand Army Highway, Swansea at 1 p.m. Karen will talk about her experiences racing in the Iditarod, the annual long-distance sled dog race run in early March from Anchorage to Nome.The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but has evolved into today's highly competitive race. Karen will share stories and slides about her adventures in the Iditarod race.

Each Monday from 2-3 p.m., Simply Done, the Cookbook and Coupon Club meets to discuss food, swap recipes and cut coupons. This month we will be discussing the cookbooks of Lidia Bastianich.

Every Tuesday is Family History from 12-2 p.m with the Tuesday Club. Work on your family history using the libraries resources including Ancestry.com.

Every Wednesday is Crafternoons from 12-2 p.m. Each week a different craft will be highlighted. Check the library calendar on the Swansea Public Library website.

Every Thursday the Swansea Knitters meet from 12-2 p.m.. Knitters of all levels are invited to join this lively bunch of friends.

 The Swansea Public Library invites you to celebrate spring with a special program, on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. Mary Martha Murphy returns with her program, All about Birds. Learn about the wonderful world of bird watching. This program will show you how to identify birds, use field guides and binoculars and share with you the best local places for bird watching. Mary will also share her knowledge of bird feeders and bird houses. The Swansea Public Library has binoculars for the public to check out. Spend time with nature in this wonderful hobby.

 Adult Book Clubs are also open to new members at the library. The Swansea Sleuth’s meet the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Reference Room. This month’s reads include The Reckoning and The Burning by Jane Casey. Past Times: the Historical Fiction Book Club meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Reference Room. This month’s read is The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White. The Brown Bag Book Club meets the third Friday of each month at noon in the Reference Room. March’s book is The Dead Ringer by M.C. Beaton. YA for Grownups takes place the fourth Thursday of each month. This month’s read is Purple Hibiscus by author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Books can be reserved at the library. New members are always welcomed.

  TIVERTON

Tuesday, April 2, 6 p.m. in the Community Room, it’s a frenzy of fisticuffs at Retro Game Club this month as attendees duke it out across a variety of classic boxing games, beat-em-ups, and fighting games. Test your might in classic titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Smash Bros., and more.

Attendees will even have the opportunity to earn a free 8-bit pin to represent their vintage style, courtesy of Retro Game Club.

The Friends of the Westport Library will begin accepting book, CD and DVD donations beginning April 1st for the Summer Paperback Book sale and the huge Annual Book sale in September. Please, books in good condition only, and no textbooks, law books, medical books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, VHS or cassette tapes. A donation box will be in the Library lobby, 408 Old County Road until Aug. 30.

There will be pre-signed donation receipts available to be completed by book donors to report their donations to the IRS. Library hours: Mon and Thurs noon to 8:30, Tues, Wed, and Fri 10 to 5:00, Sat. 9 to 4. Closed Saturdays in July and August. Call 508-636-1100 for more information or to arrange for large donations.
