PUNE: Thirteen luxury buses, including a Shivshahi bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), were damaged in a major fire at a garage in Shindewadi, about 25km from the city, on Wednesday morning.
No one was injured in the incident. It took about an hour for the fire brigade to douse the blaze.
“Eight parked buses were completely destroyed, while five others were severely damaged,” fire officer Sanjay Ramteke told TOI.
He said that fire broke out in one of the parked buses around 10am on Wednesday. Within seconds, it spread to the other areas and engulfed more buses. “Two fire tenders and two water browsers were sent to the spot,” Ramteke said.
Garage owner Ashok Rai told TOI that one of his mechanics was trying to start a bus when the fire broke out due to a short circuit. “The fire immediately engulfed the entire bus due to the presence of fibre and other materials,” Rai said.
Rai and other workers tried to douse the fire by using fire extinguishers. “As the fire spread rapidly, it went beyond control. So, we immediately alerted the fire brigade,” Rai said.
Rai said that there was one Shivshahi and other private buses in the garage. “The buses were damaged in the fire,” he said.
“There are some Shivneri and Shivshahi buses, which are run by private contractors. When it comes to maintenance of these buses, it is the duty of the contractors and MSRTC has nothing to do with it. We have learnt that one Shivshahi bus along with 13 other private buses has been completely gutted. Police are investigating the cause of fire,” an MSRTC official based from Pune division told TOI, adding that the cost of one Shivshahi bus was around Rs 50 lakh.
Fire on SPPU campus
A fire broke out near the old post office on the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus late on Thursday. Seven fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames in 15 minutes.
“Dried leaves are dumped there. Apparently, as it was Holi, some slum dwellers were also cooking there. The campus security officers have handed over a few persons to the Chatushrungi police,” SPPU vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said.
