Security beefed up at Patna, Gaya airports

PATNA: With an aim to keep tabs on poll-related expenses, the Election Commission (EC) has instructed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) department to share details of choppers and charter flights being used by leaders of different political parties for the purpose of electioneering.
"The ATC offices at the Patna and Gaya airports have to share all the data related to choppers, charter flights as well as passengers with the state chief electoral officer and their respective district electoral officers," additional chief electoral officer Sanjay Kumar Singh told this newspaper on Tuesday, adding operators of private aircraft and helicopters would have to declare the content of the baggage and suitcases they carried.
A decision in this regard was taken at a recent meeting of the EC to review election-related expenditure during the forthcoming Lok Sabha (LS) polls.
"Those, travelling by charter flights and choppers, will be frisked and their baggage checked like common people," a Jayaprakash Narayan International (JPNI) Airport official said and added no private aircraft had landed in Patna after the implementation of the model code of conduct.
Besides, three teams each of Income Tax Air Intelligence Unit have been deployed at the Patna and Gaya airports to monitor the movement of VIPs as well as common flyers. They will be at work 24X7 throughout the LS elections.
The airport official further said, "There is no restriction on legal cash movement, but the person carrying the money should have the required documents for his/her identification. With a view to strengthening the security at airports, the number of Central Industrial Security Force personnel deployed in Patna and Gaya has been increased."
