Ludhiana: The Ludhiana police on Tuesday booked two cops after Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) chief and Atam Nagar MLA Simarjit Singh Bains live streamed their alleged act of corruption in a motorcycle theft case.
The accused were identified as head constables Jaswant Singh and Avtar Singh, who are posted at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police post.

Talking to The Times of India, Bains said on January 22, the motorcycle of Manpreet Singh, a resident of Salem Tabri, was stolen from outside his workplace, near DMC. Manpreet informed the police and also posted on social media about the theft.

Bains said after that someone informed him that his motorcycle was parked near Basti Jodhewal. He went there and recovered it two days ago and then went to the DMCH police post to apprise cops of it. The police seized his bike, the LIP leader said, and the cops asked for a bribe of Rs 10,000 to ensure that he doesn’t have to take its possession from the court. The motorcycle’s worth is about Rs 8,000 (it is a 2010 model Splendor). Manpreet bargained with the policemen and the deal was settled at Rs 5,000, he added.

Bains said, “After Manpreet approached me, I asked Randhir Singh Sibia, who had contested assembly elections from Ludhiana (North) as LIP candidate, to go with him to give the money. At that time, I was in Samrala for an election meeting, but live streamed the corruption incident.”

“We had installed a secret camera on Manpreet, gave him marked currency notes and clicked their pictures. After getting caught, one of the cops — Jaswant Singh— apologized to our team, which too we recorded,” Bains added.

The complainant, Manpreet, said he worked as a designer at a photostat shop in the DMCH area. He said the policemen asked him to give Rs 10,000 for closing the case and returning his motorcycle else he would have to spend Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 in the courts. He said he supported his family as his father, who ran a juice vend, doesn’t work now because of back problem. He added that he had to pay a bribe of Rs 500 for getting a case registered and the police knew about the thieves, but didn’t act.

Bains said syringes and intoxicants were recovered from the glove compartment of the motorcycle left by the thieves.

Civil Lines ACP Mandeep Singh said the two cops have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and were on the run. “A manhunt has been launched to nab them. They were booked on the basis of video evidence and the complainant’s account,” he added.

Bains said there was audio evidence against the police post in-charge too, but he has been left off the hook. He added that if the commissioner of police didn’t act against the post in-charge, they would lodge a complaint against him with the election commission.
