An aspiring male model who avoided a conviction after being caught with a bag of MDMA in his mouth at a Sydney festival received a letter of support from a South Australian Supreme Court judge.

Angus Bernard Rodman, 20, was at the Field Day music festival in Sydney's Domain on January 1, when a police drug dog flagged him, court documents show.

Officers approached Rodman and asked if he had drugs in his possession and he 'mumbled' a response.

At that point, the documents state, Rodman spat out a resealable plastic bag containing white powder.

Rodman was arrested and later charged with possessing half a gram of MDMA.

NSW Police say he 'made full admissions' to possessing the drug and entered a guilty plea when the matter went before a Sydney court earlier this year.

Former South Australian solicitor-general and now Supreme Court judge Martin Hinton QC wrote a character reference to the court in February stating Rodman was 'a young man of great potential'.

'I am aware of the offence with which Angus has been charged,' the letter, seen by AAP, states.

'It does not change my opinion of him.'

Justice Hinton said he'd known Rodman since he was eight years old and was his first basketball coach.

More than 150 people were arrested during the Field Day drug dog operation, NSW Police said at the time.

Five people were hospitalised - four for suspected drug-related issues.

Rodman on Tuesday was found guilty by a magistrate at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court with no conviction recorded.

He was handed a 12-month conditional release order under which he must not commit any further offences.

'I have never seen him act in an unsportsmanlike manner,' Justice Hinton wrote in his letter.

'I have every expectation that he will display these qualities in life generally.'

The South Australian judge said Rodman would likely be disappointed in himself and embarrassed for his 'unwaveringly supportive' parents.

Rodman's lawyer, Omar Juweinat, declined to comment on the specifics of the case but noted there was no safe way to consume MDMA.

'Unlike cannabis, how would you really know what you're ingesting?' he told AAP on Wednesday.

'There really cannot be a middle ground.'

Justice Hinton declined to comment when contacted by AAP.
