CHENNAI: A four-year-old girl child with bruises and branding marks on her body was rescued from her adoptive parents at Mandaiveli on Tuesday by child welfare committee (CWC) officials and sent to an orphanage in the city. Police are questioning the parents and the child will undergo a detailed medical examination to determine the extent and cause of her injuries.
The child had bruises on her left cheek, injuries on both hands and a branding mark on her left leg.

The couple, natives of West Bengal, had adopted the child from a government-run centre in Kolkata just three months ago. Her injuries were noticed by a team from the child adoption resource authority (CARA) that visited her home on one of its monthly inspections. The man is a techie working with a Chennai firm.

The CARA team informed CWC officials who rescued the child. They took the child to the Don Bosco Anbu Illam for orphanage and rescued children in Chennai Central. The child will be taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and based on the medical report and a CWC complaint, the city police would decided how to proceed against the couple.

A police officer said, "We are waiting for the medical report from the GH. A woman police officer has been assigned to question the couple based on the preliminary complaint lodged by the CWC."

An investigation officer said, "We will register a case against the couple based on the inquiry and medical report."
