Deceased dragged for 100 metres

A 30-year-old man died while a minor sustained injury on Tuesday after a speeding truck rammed their scooter in north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate, the police said. The man was dragged nearly 100 metres, they said.

Deceased Deepak Rawat, and the minor, Badal (17), were friends and residents of Gandhi Nagar, they said.

A senior police officer said the police were informed about the accident around 5 a.m.

The speeding truck hit the scooter near Yamuna Bridge. Badal fell a few metres away, while Rawat got stuck under the tyres of the truck and were dragged. Instead of slowing down, the truck driver dragged him for nearly 100 metres before fleeing the spot, the police officer also ssaid.

The victims were rushed to a hospital by the locals, the officer added.

Rawat was declared brought dead while Badal was discharged after being treated, the police said.

They also said that Rawat and Badal were returning from a relative’s place.

Rawat’s family members have been informed about the incident. The police said that his post-mortem examination will be conducted on Wednesday.

Rawat’s family members said that he used to work at a shop in Gandhi Nagar and lived separately. Badal used to live in Old Seemapuri earlier and had recently shifted to Gandhi Nagar, the officer said.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and efforts are on to nab the driver of the offending vehicle, the police said.
