The civic body will has embarked on a few steps to streamline conservancy work and the difference will be noticeable in the days to come, sources familiar with the development say.
The first of the steps is the Corporation setting in motion the process to procure more than 100 small goods carriers to be deployed in primary waste collection – from houses, apartments, commercial establishments and industries.
It will deploy the vehicles in almost all the 100 wards in the city and they come with public announcement systems to inform the public of their presence for handing over waste.
The second steps is the Corporation deploying conservancy workers in afternoons/evenings for work other than waste collection, like cleaning roads. To monitor the work, the Corporation has given additional responsibility to senior officers.
The third of the steps, say the sources, is expediting the completion of work in micro-composting centres to enable processing of organic waste generated in each of the centres' neighbourhood.
The fourth will be engaging students in the summer holidays interns to study waste generated in the 100 wards to come up with appropriate local strategy to dispose of the waste.
The sources also say that the Corporation hopes that the steps it has taken and will take will bring about a change in the way the civic body handles the waste generated in the city.
Officials in the Corporation's health wing say that they are already on their toes as the Commissioner, Sravan Kumar Jatavath, is inspecting various places in the city on bicycles, without the official machinery in tow, and then calling them up for immediate action. In the past few days he visited localities off Avinashi and Trichy roads.
The Corporation sources further say that the civic body is reintroducing the walkie-talkie system to enable senior officials to effectively monitor the work on the ground. The Corporation launched the system a few years but gave it up in the past couple of years.
