BENGALURU: The BJP on Tuesday slammed state police action against some techies for raising pro-Modi slogans at Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's event in Karnataka.

“Hugs for ‘Tukde Tukde’ gang and arrest of peaceful youth raising pro-Modi slogans? Where are the champions of ‘Free Speech’?," BJP national president Amit Shah tweeted.

BJP state leader R Ashoka in Bengaluru condemned the incident and said the party will be backing the techies who raised the pro-Modi slogans at the event.

“While the BJP and the detained techies have no connection whatsoever, we will nonetheless provide legal assistance to them in the case,” he said.

Ashoka claimed that the police had even snatched the mobile phones of the techies and released them at 10 pm on Monday night after issuing warnings.

“The IT company professionals were dragged to the police station and harassed by the Khaki-clad men before being released with a warning,” claimed Ashoka.

The party has said it will launch protests against the police if the techies were continued to be harassed.

“Similar incident took place in Mount Carmel’s college where pro-Modi sloganeering took place. So will people attribute that they were also part of the BJP?” questioned Ashoka, after KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao claimed that the protests were organised by the BJP.
