After the youth from Karunya Nagar dumped garbage in front of Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences on Monday, the university has granted interim access to their private dump yard to dump the wastes of shops around their campus.
Ramkumar from Siruvani Vizhuthugal, an environment non-governmental organisation (NGO), told The Hindu that the access had been granted till the registrar of the institution returned to the college on Saturday. “The university management has said that a permanent solution can be reached after discussing with the registrar,” Mr. Ramkumar said. On Monday, the local youth dumped garbage in front of the Institute to reportedly protest the university’s refusal to allow the shops around the campus to use its dump yard. “The shops are benefiting the students of this institution,” Mr. Ramkumar said. “We [Siruvani Vizhuthugal] are representing the local people. We are not against any particular religion or community,” he added.
An official from Karunya, who spoke to The Hindu on conditions of anonymity, said that the interim access had been granted to use the dump yard till Saturday. “The police called both parties on Monday night after the incident. After finding out there was no one to speak on behalf of Karunya’s management, they advised that the garbage from the shops be dumped here for a few more days till the registrar returns,” the official said.
