Google Photos for Android gets Express backup and Data Cap

“Google Photos Express backup feature backups photos even when the Wi-Fi connectivity isn’t consistent”

Google Photos currently offers two backup options: Original Quality and High Quality, with certain storage limitations though. Now, the search engine giant has introduced a new Express backup option, which it was testing with selected few Android users since last December. The new Express backup option is especially aimed at India where the Wi-Fi connectivity isn’t very stable resulting in longer backup times.

The Express backup provides faster backups by reducing the resolution of the photos, meaning the resolution and quality of the image will be reduced. It saves the images even when the Wi-Fi connectivity isn’t very stable or consistent. The Original Quality and High Quality existing backup options would still be available at the user’s disposal. In addition to the Express backup, Google is also introducing a new Data Cap option for backup using the mobile data. It lets users select from a range of daily data caps starting at 5MB. However, Google Photos will still use Wi-Fi as default for backups when it is available.

The Express backup option has already started rolling out to Android users using the latest version of Google Photos and will be available to all Android users by the end of this week. Apart from India, Google also plans to introduce the Express backup option to other countries gradually in the coming weeks but hasn’t given any specific date.
