A static surveillance team seized unaccounted cash of ₹34.08 lakh from a youth travelling in a private bus proceeding to Nagercoil on Tuesday.

District Collector and Returning Officer Prashant M. Wadnere has deployed 18 static surveillance teams (SST) across the district after the model code of conduct for ensuing Lok Sahba polls came into effect to check the movement of gifts and the cash meant for voters. The SST led by Deputy Tahsildar Saraswathi, intercepted a private bus proceeding to Nagercoil at Therekaalpudhur on Tuesday morning.

When the SST members checked the baggage of the commuters, they found ₹34.08 lakh in the denomination of ₹2,000 and ₹500 in the bag of one Mohamed Kabiludeen, 31, of Ramanathapuram. As he could not immediately submit valid and acceptable documents for taking the hefty sum with him, he was picked-up for interrogation.

The SST also alerted the Income Tax department officials about the seizure.

“The seized money will be returned if Mr. Mohamed submits valid documents,” said the officials.
