CHANDIGARH: The resident welfare associations that want CCTV cameras in their areas for better monitoring of crime should come forward and ask police to recommend the locations. Sector-34 station house officer (SHO) Baldev Kumar suggested this to RWAs members from six sectors at the second police-public interaction in his office on Monday.
Chandigarh Residents' Associations Welfare Federation (Crawfed) and organised this meeting. The SHO was with officer in charge of the Burail police post. After listening to the suggestions of the RWA representatives, Baldev Kumar asked to "become the eyes and ears of police". He recommended CCTV cameras in residential areas, for which he promised assistance to the associations. He also assured them of frequent meetings.
Crawfed chairman Hitesh Puri said: "The meeting was a platform for both police and the residents to keep their views so that issues can be resolved and suggestions can be taken forward. The meeting was organised on the directions of senior superintendent of police Nilambari Jagdale, who had proposed close interaction between the RWAs and the area cops to eliminate crime from the city and catch anti-social elements."
Federation's vice-chairman Surinder Sharma said: "Every RWA should install CCTV cameras at vantage points to work in coordination with police. Crawfed chief spokesperson Anish Garg said: "Police should raid taverns and night-food shops, where violence was common." Federation's general secretary Umesg Ghai said the body will give police a list of all member RWAs for better communication.
