The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday asked the State if its order specifying that post mortem must be videographed and kept as a copy for record was complied with.

A Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S. S. Sundar also asked the State to reply on filling up vacancies to the post of Scientific Officer in government hospitals. The court was earlier informed that there was a total of 48 vacancies.

The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by advocate Arun Swaminathan who complained that a ‘cut-copy-paste’ procedure was followed while issuing certificates. The conduct of post mortem was not in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Medical Code, he said and sought a direction to videograph post mortem across the State, in order to avoid irregularities.

The court had, suo motu, impleaded the Dean of Madurai Rajaji Hospital in the case after it was alleged that a number of post mortem reports were still pending. They were yet to be signed and sent to the police stations concerned, the court was informed. The case was adjourned by two weeks.
