MOHALI: A man was picked up from his rented accommodation in Phase 3B2, thrashed and robbed of his car in a two-and-a-half-hour-long drama here on Monday evening.

Five persons, including a woman, forcibly took away Kirpal Singh from the house he had sub-let to girls at gunpoint at 4.30pm and took his Maruti Brezza SUV. The accused allegedly took him to a farmhouse in Nayagaon and thrashed him. They dropped him at Phase VII after two hours.

This abduction in plain sight by a group of miscreants, including a woman, in the peak evening hours shows their utter disregard for the law. In fact, they were so confident that one of them even told the victim’s wife over phone that they would be bringing him back soon. Such complacency and confidence clearly stems from their mindset of ‘getting away with anything’. The cops began looking for the abductors, but were apparently clueless. So many proposals of CCTV surveillance are floated, some even implemented, but when a major crime happens, nothing seems to help. The police forces of the Tricity can at least have high-definition cameras installed on the perimeter roads and exit points to help track offenders.

Police sources said the incident came to light when the victim’s wife called up police control room (PCR). She said, “The five accused had come in a Toyota Innova SUV and kidnapped my husband at gunpoint after taking his vehicle.” She said she continuously tried to call him but he did not answer her calls. Two hours later, she received a phone call from her husband’s number, with one of the accused telling her that he will reach home in a few minutes.

After receiving the information, Mataur station house officer inspector Jagdev Singh and ASP city I launched a search operation to find him.

Kirpal, a resident of Phase V, said he had to recover Rs 3 lakh from the woman who had accompanied the accused. She had allegedly taken Rs 3 lakh from him on the pretext of providing job to his brother-in-law in PGI, but neither fulfilled the promise nor returned the money, Kirpal said.

Inspector Jagdev Singh said, “We have begun investigation and are verifying the facts. Prima facie it seems to be case of a monetary dispute.”
