Tashkent Files, film on former PM Lal Bahadur Shashtri’s mysterious death, to release on April 12

Titled Tashkent Files, the Vivek Agnihotri directorial will release on April 12 and aims at unravelling the ‘mystery’ behind the death of India’s second prime minister.

Filmmaker and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) member Vivek Agnihotri has shared a new poster of his upcoming film on Lal Bahadur Shashtri,Tashkent Files, and announced the release date of the film. The film focusses on the mysterious death of India’s second prime minister.

Lal Bahadur Shastri died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966 at the age of 61 soon after signing the Tashkent Pact with Pakistan. It was maintained that he died of cardiac arrest but his family had alleged foul play. The new poster of the film appears like a newspaper cutout and says, “After defeating Pakistan, the Prime Minister of India mysteriously dead.” It also has a postal stamp featuring Shashtri’s face. The film stars Shweta Basu, Pankaj Tripathi, Pallavi Joshi, Mandira Bedi, Vinay Pathak, Naseeruddin Shah and Mithun Chakraborty.

Vivek shared the poster and release date and wrote in a series of tweets, “Friends, the film you’ve been waiting for: The man you know… The mystery you don’t! #TheTashkentFiles Releasing on 12th April 2019. #WhoKilledShastri #MithunChakraborty #NaseeruddinShah @shweta_official @TripathiiPankaj @pathakvinay @mandybedi #PallaviJoshi #LalBahadurShastri. Talking about the film, Vivek had earlier said in a press statement, “Both Naseeruddin and Mithun are powerhouses and were obvious choices for the film. This film also brings them together onscreen after a long time. The two are extremely excited about the project and I am sure the audience will be waiting to see them in this new avatar.”

The film’s trailer is set to be launched in Delhi on March 25.
