Two persons helping some road accident victims were killed by a speeding truck in Shastri Park in North East district on March 16 night, the police said on Monday.
The police said that at around 11.50 p.m., an autorickshaw ferrying four members of a family towards Seelampur was hit by an allegedly speeding car. Locals rushed to rescue the passengers in the autorickshaw while the car driver fled the accident spot. When a group of people was helping the accident victims, a speeding truck ran over the crowd. Five people were reported injured and rushed to GTB Hospital in a PCR van.
Driver was drunk
The truck was travelling from Kashmere Gate towards Dasna when the incident happened. The driver identified as Manohar Lal, 30, a resident of Najafgarh in west Delhi, was arrested from the accident spot. He was drunk at the time of arrest, said a senior police officer.
“Of the five injured persons who were rushed to the hospital, two succumbed to injuries during treatment. The deceased were identified as Chander, (53), and Zahid (46). They were local residents and had gone to help the passengers injured in the road accident when the truck hit them. The bodies were handed over to the respective families,” added the officer.
The injured persons — Danish, Mehraj and Zameel Ahmed are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Accused jailed
“The offending vehicle [truck] has been impounded and the driver has been booked under IPC Section 304 [culpable homicide not amounting to murder] and 279 [rash driving] at Shastri Park police station. He has been sent to jail after medical examination,” added the officer.
The police said a PCR van had reached the spot after the first accident was reported. On finding the passengers were safe, they started clearing the traffic.
However, all of a sudden, the truck rammed the crowd. “The driver was rescued by the policemen from being lynched by the mob. He was later taken to the police station,” the officer said.
