Pimpri-Chinchwad: Desperate to raise funds for the treatment of heart ailments he and his wife suffered, a 54-year-old man resorted to stealing, according to Pimpri Police, who have arrested him after examining CCTV camera footage. He has been identified as Anil Gaikwad. The man and his wife are being treated at Daund for cardiac issues.
They are unable to work due to health problems, while their son works as a labourer in Pune. His meagre earnings were insufficient to cover the expenses for their treatment. On March 7, when Gaikwad reached Ruby Hospital, he was asked to pay Rs 2.5 lakh for surgery.
Stressed, as soon as he left the hospital, he stole a two-wheeler and went to his relatives in Pimpri-Chinchwad. He then carried out a recce of a jewellery store. He saw a customer purchasing ornaments and a mobile at the store, deposit the purchases in the trunk of his car and proceed to a mithai shop.
That is when Gaikwad somehow managed to open the trunk of the car and steal the ornaments and mobile, collectively valued at Rs 1.22 lakh. However, his actions were captured on a CCTV camera and police arrested him.
