Activists launch campaign to shift voter focus to basic issues
TNN | Mar 19, 2019, 07:46 ISTNEW DELHI: Prominent activists, including Swaraj Abhiyan’s Yogendra Yadav, have urged voters to think beyond national security while voting in the Lok Sabha elections.
Around two dozen activists from civil society organisations on Monday announced the launch of a nationwide campaign — Desh Mera, Vote Mera, Mudda Mera (My country, My vote, My issues) — to bring to the fore issues such as unemployment, farm distress and education.
They will connect with voters at the ground level to encourage them to focus on basic issues that lie beyond the rhetoric. The issue of national security is being highlighted before the elections and has overshadowed the critical issues impacting common people, said Yadav.
The campaign will start on Saturday from Tinsukia in Assam along with simultaneous programmes in several places and conclude with an adivasi conclave in Nandurbar, Maharashtra. In between, various programmes will be held across India. It will also highlight that two pro-farmer bills — freedom from debt and guaranteed remunerative prices — are pending before Parliament.
