New system to be used for entering marks after evaluation of SSLC answer scripts; it is expected to reduce errors in the process

This year, SSLC and II PU students can expect their results to be announced earlier than previous years and more accurate than before, with the Department of Primary and Secondary Education announcing that the results of the both the examinations will be announced in April.

At a press conference on Monday, P.C. Jaffer, Commissioner for Public Instruction and Director, Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE), said though the department could not commit to exact dates, they had chalked out an evaluation schedule to ensure that the results were announced earlier this year.

Last year, while the II PU exam results were announced on April 30, SSLC exam results were out on May 7.

While 8.41 lakh students have registered for the SSLC exam this time, 6.73 lakh students had registered for the II PU exam. For the first time, marks will be entered online during the evaluation for both the exams. This, officials said, would help in faster processing of the results.

Hitherto, evaluators used to fill the marks in an OMR sheet. The sheets would be sent to the respective boards and processed. Under the new system, the evaluators, will enter the marks online.

Mr. Jaffer said, “In the SSLC 2018 supplementary exam, we tried this system and found that it was successful, so this process will be followed for the 2019 SSLC exam. However, for the II PU exam, we will follow both the manual system as well as the online system as no trial was done,” he said.

This system is expected to reduce errors as many evaluators would make mistakes while shading the OMR sheets, officials said.

Data will be entered twice — by the evaluator and then by the deputy chief. If there is a mismatch in numbers, the joint chief will get an alert and then the marks will have to be rectified, V. Sumangala, Director, Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB), said.

While the evaluation for the II PU exam will begin on March 25, that for SSLC exam will begin on April 10. The II PU evaluation will be completed before the State goes to the polls. Evaluators deployed for SSLC exam are likely to get a break for the elections.
