Information leak halted probe into Surat financier’s murder
tnn | Mar 20, 2019, 04:00 ISTSurat: Police had strong leads in the murder of private financier Mahendra Shah, but have been unable to arrest his attackers though two weeks have passed since he was shot dead in his shop here. Police sources said they were working on initial leads when the attackers received information about police’s movement and slipped out of surveillance.
The two attackers would have been nabbed from the place of their hiding in Rajasthan, but a tip off by someone in the city about police’s movements made they go underground. Police had received specific leads from a person who knew the attackers and helped them during their stay in the city.
The accused have been identified but police won’t name them as this could harm their investigation. Police are yet to find out the exact motive behind Shah’s murder though it is suspected that he was shot dead due to a financial dispute.
Within couple of hours of murder on March 5, police recovered the motorcycle used by the assailants. The attackers had escaped after leaving the motorcycle behind Athwa police station. The motorcycle had been stolen from Pandesara.
Multiple CCTV footages recovered by police helped them establish the identity of the accused. Police were able to gather details of their native places too. Police teams left the city with specific information about their location but failed to nab them as they had gone underground after being tipped off by someone.
“We are making serious attempts to nab the accused who are on the run. We will get success soon,” a police officer said.
