KOLKATA: A minor girl, who appeared in her board exams this year, emerged a braveheart after she stood up to two of her tormentors and got them arrested. The two had verbally abused her and her cousin and also made objectionable gestures in a private bus they were travelling in. The girl’s father is an officer with Kolkata Police. The incident was reported around 4.20pm on Monday.
The 15-year-old girl promptly dialled the 100 helpline number and cops from Rabindra Sarobar police station were alerted by Lalbazar control room. Two of the accused, Md Shahnawaz and Md Sheroo, were detained from the bus near Deshapriya Park and later arrested.
According to the girl’s mother, the 15-year-old noticed the two youths standing too close to her and her 18-year-old sister from the Ramlal Bazar area. The 212-route bus had left the Palbazar stand and was on its way to Howrah. The girl tried not to react but the accused began making indecent gestures and passing lewd comments.
Later, when they tried to click her photograph, the bus had reached Kasba post office area. The girl immediately called up her father who failed to respond to her. A call to her mother, too, went unanswered.
“She then called up 100. We have always instructed her to dial police for help. She ensured that she made the calls discreetly. She had also not sought any help from any passengers as it might be difficult to explain everything. That would have given the two youths a chance to flee. By the time the bus reached Deshapriya Park, the cops were waiting for the bus and nab the accused,” said the victim’s mother.
The police officer said this was a perfect example of how to react to such situations. “We are always ready to listen and react immediately to any such distress calls,” said a Lalbazar official. Cops said the girl would soon record her statement before a magistrate.
