NEW DELHI: Will a severed finger help solve a case of theft in a bus? The cops have been left tracking down a set of finger prints quite literally. The pickpocket lost his own finger during a stabbing spree in west Delhi on Sunday evening, leaving behind a trail of blood and three injured men.

Complainant Ranjit Kumar Yadav, 26, told police that he and his cousins Dharmender, Mukesh Yadav and Anil Yadav boarded an RTV bus at Peera Garhi on their way to Janakpuri. According to Ranjit, two men in their 20s embarked the crowded bus near the CRPF camp in Vikaspuri.

“We had to get down from the bus and so stood near the gate when I realised that my wallet was missing from my pocket,” Ranjit said in his statement to the cops. “I immediately asked the driver to stop the bus and told everyone that no one should leave the vehicle till they were frisked.”

The four men started searching for the wallet and spotted one of the youths acting suspiciously. Ranjit claimed to the cops that he saw the man drop his wallet on the bus floor. When confronted with questions, the youth’s friend pulled out a knife.

The armed man then made a dash for the exit and in the process, charged at Dharmender who was standing in his way. He slashed at Dharmender’s arm, but could not dissuade him from fighting back. During the melee, the youth lost one of his fingers. The injury did not deter him and he wildly swung his knife at people, stabbing Anil in the stomach and injuring Mukesh too before he ran out of the bus.

Later, the victims called the police control room and the injured were taken to a hospital, where Anil was determined to be severely injured. Dharmender and Mukesh too had suffered cut wounds. The three injured men are stated to be out of danger but remain under medical observation.

The cops recorded the quartet’s statements and registered a case of robbery at Vikaspuri police station. The investigating teams visited the scene of crime. Inside the RTV bus bearing registration number DL1VA 9811, the cops recovered the finger of the suspected thief and preserved it for further investigation. A forensic team also collected other pieces of evidence that can yield more information.

A few suspects have been detained for questioning about their probable involvement in the crime. Footage from CCTV cameras in the area is being perused to ascertain the sequence of events and for clues to the identity of the two youths.
