“If you say the word Peru to someone they almost automatically reply, ‘Oh, Machu Picchu. But there’s so much more to Peru than that.”

Elisabeth Hakim and the tourism team from PromPeru put on an event in Toronto of late to try to give country’s other parts a bit more of a profile.

“We have the highlands, the magnificent Andes mountains, great beaches, the Amazon rain forest (almost two-thirds of the country) and so much more,” she said. “You can go white water rafting or horseback riding.

“There are new archeological sites being discovered, as well as Amazon cruises with top-notch luxury. You can see some of the world’s highest waterfalls, and also see sarcophagi hanging from the cliffs.”

The capital of Lima is a gastronomic star and has spectacular colonial buildings and great art.

Visits from Canada are up almost 12 percent, she said.

Hakim informed TravelPulse Canada that her organization is working in tandem works with the agents to endorse Peru visits. Also, she said that the agent with the highest sales can earn cash, and they’re in the process of starting some fam trips.

“Peru offers a very authentic experience, and we’re trying to help get the word out.”

Cristina Hure of The Travel Corporation in Toronto said interest in Peru is huge.

“It’s our most popular Latin American destination,” she said.

Air Canada rouge provides direct flights to Lima from both Toronto and Montreal. The flight is only eight and-a-half hours and involves only a one-hour time zone change, Hakim pointed out.
